Energy management system DIN EN 16001
The fundamental objective of DIN EN 16001 (energy management system) is to provide companies with support during the implementation of systems and processes that continually improve their energy efficiency. Systematic energy management aims to reduce the volume of energy required, the energy costs and also the greenhouse gas emissions. The objective of energy management systems is the mandatory integration of all levels and functions within an organisation, including the top management level, in order to achieve a continual improvement in the energy situation.
Why?
As early as in 2006, the European Commission requested its member states to motivate companies to introduce energy management systems. On this basis, the German government announced that when the amendment to the Renewable Energy Act (EEG) enters into force on 1.1.2013, exemption from the EEG levy will only be possible if evidence of an energy management system in accordance with DIN EN 16001 or EMAS registration is provided. This certificate must have been issued during the previous financial year (i.e. 2011). In addition, there are already signs that as of 1.1.2013 electricity tax will only be reimbursed to those companies in the manufacturing sector that provide evidence of an energy management system. Energy management systems frequently lead to significant energy cost savings owing to increased transparency in the illustration of energy flows and the allocation of clear responsibilities within the company. A further argument in favour of the introduction of an energy management system is that product and corporate carbon footprints can be calculated with greater precision.
